Q: Is a dedicated server required for MADCAP?

A: No it is not required, but we do recommend it. If the server is used for other purposes (email server etc.) we cannot guarantee that the server specifications specified will provide good performance.

Q: Can we host our own MADCAP web interface?

A: Yes you can, but you will need to have a dedicated internet connection, a domain name or static IP address and a server to host the MADCAP web interface running Microsoft IIS 2.0 or better.

Q: What is 'Thin client' software?

A: Software that allows PCs to connect to the MADCAP database server. All the processing is done by the database or application server and the thin client PCs (PCs running the thin client software) only send requests and receive results. That is why the thin client hardware requirements are quite low.

Q: What is a database or application server?

A: The PC containing the MADCAP database is the database server and runs the 'database' software. You are able to use a PC as an application server, running the 'application' server software. The application server software links back to the database server and thin client PCs connect to the application server instead of the database server. The application server uses its own processing power to query the database and send results to thin client PCs. This allows you to spread the load on the database server across to one or more application servers.
